This is something with anyone with a minimum amount of common sense wouldn't ever even consider.
It's tragic that the child is sick, but this is essentially faceman's own fault, or at the very least, he is the only one responsible for making the decision in the first place. "Fault" has too many connotations.

he was one of the most prepared sailors I know. Thousands of boats do this journey every year. He got some bad luck

his kid could have gotten very sick or horribly injured driving out west to see the grand canyon. EVERYTHING we do has risks associated with it.
